Anti-Cigarettes Pitch Stars TinCaps
Hoping to knock cigarettes out of not just the park but also the entire community, Parkview Hospital, buy cigarettes Free Allen County and the TinCaps Thursday announced an alliance targeting area youth.
The joint initiative, titled “Choose to be cigarettes online Free,” will use the three organizations’ resources to combat online cigarettes use among middle- and high-school students.
Funded by the Parkview Foundation through a grant from discount cigarettes Free Allen County, the public health campaign will be evident at the TinCaps’ facilities starting this weekend, when group organizers are sponsoring fireworks displays on Friday and Saturday.
In addition, Parkview and cigarettes Free Allen County will operate a kiosk at Parkview Field offering information. Although the kiosk and fireworks are only one-time commitments slated for this weekend, the coalition has other plans.
A full page advertisement featuring the “Choose to be cheap cigarettes Free” mission will be printed in the TinCaps’ GameDay program.
The team also will continue to show anti-cigarettes public service announcements at games and during live broadcasts for the rest of the season.
Standing on Parkview Field’s main concourse Thursday, Parkview nurse Linda Kerr praised the anti-cigarettes coalition as a constructive step toward halting a dangerous addiction. One that is “so difficult to shake once it takes hold,” she said.
Dick Conklin, executive director at cheap cigarettes Free Allen County, added the collaboration among local entities is a pointed reminder that the “emphasis needs to be on the youth.”
But all initiative representatives stressed the universal call to action of ending players’ cigarettes use everywhere.
“How many times do you turn on the TV and see professional players chewing and spitting?” Conklin asked. “And it’s just terrible.”
Michael Limmer, the TinCaps’ vice president of marketing and promotions, agreed such unhealthy habits trickle down to aspiring players, specifying that the new campaign will employ a “more of a positive role model message,” rather than the grisly scare tactics of similar efforts nationwide.
He described the goal of “Choose to be cigarettes Free” as “hammering home” a strong anti-cigarettes message for youth, especially among student athletes and coaches.
Minor league baseball already discourages or outright bans cigarettes use, so the collaboration jels nicely with the TinCaps’ current approach, Limmer said.
“For minor league baseball to have that as a part of their guidelines, it just made that a perfect fit,” he said, referring to the local initiative.
Conklin noted anti-cigarettes efforts locally may already be making progress: From 2000 to 2008, cigarettes use among Allen County high school students decreased from 31.6 percent to 18.3 percent.
“That’s a significant drop, and that’s why we’re here,” he said. “We just stress that as part of who we are and what we do.”
