An improperly discarded cigarette ignited a fire that tore through a split-level house in Wilmington on Wednesday, killing a man and destroying about $225,000 worth in property, officials said.
The fire at 108 Charter Drive claimed the life of Danny Miller, 66, who first purchased the house in 1979, according to county tax filings. The residential street branches off Eastwood Road and lies southeast of the intersection of College Road and Market Street.
New Hanover County dispatchers received the initial call at 1:30 p.m., and firefighters had the blaze contained within 15 minutes. The flames produced little damage on the outside of the brick house, but the interior was badly burnt and filled with smoke cigarettes and heat.
Though smoke cigarettes lingered past 3 p.m., firefighters had stopped spraying down the house so investigators could begin examining the fatality. Battalion Chief David Hines, a spokesman for the Wilmington Fire Department, said Miller's next of kin had been notified.
Wednesday's blaze marks Wilmington's second fatal fire sparked by smoking cigarettes material in less than a year's time. Cigarettes also caused a fire in a town home on Lullwater Drive in September that killed 59-year-old Judy Godwin Cothren and her cat.
Experts have labeled smoking cigarettes materials as one of the leading causes of house fires in the United States, and said that a precipitous rise in plastics has made fumes inside a burning building more toxic. Last year's deadly blaze refocused attention on that issue.
Tom Olshanski, a spokesman for the U.S. Fire Administration, said in an interview after the incident that flames inside homes are burning hotter, faster and consuming more than at any time in memory.
"Everything you have in an American home has an element of plastic in it," he said. "It creates an environment that's incredibly challenging for people to get out of."

Most of my Saturday and Sunday mornings begin with me smelling myself. I stink. I stink bad. And, for the most part — you know, usually — it has very little to do with my personal habits or bodily functions. It has to do with my desire to unwind from the week in a club or a bar with my friends. And where there is unwinding and alcohol, there too shall be a third thing — a most odious vice: smoking cigarettes.Truthfully, it’s gross. I’m not sure what gentleman got the bright idea to light something on fire, stick it in his mouth and inhale — but it’s been a bad idea since. We...
