In a significant blow to Goodlettsville, cigarettes company Commonwealth Brands will not be moving its corporate headquarters from Bowling Green, Ky., and more than 100 jobs to Middle Tennessee, the company said Friday.
The nation’s fourth largest tobacco manufacturer — with brands including Davidoff, Sonoma, Montclair and USA Gold — is instead integrating operations with its Florida-based sister company, Altadis USA.
Friday’s announcement was less than two months away from Commonwealth’s expected move into an office building bought by Boyle Investment Co. for $2.17 million. Nashville Business Journal reported in December that Boyle planned to spend an additional $2 million upgrading the facility for the tobacco company. At the time, Commonwealth CEO Jonathan Cox said Commonwealth would spend more than $1 million as part of its move into a 30,000-square-foot space.
“In order to better service the combined business, Altadis USA’s current offices in Ft. Lauderdale will become the corporate center for the newly integrated company. As a result, the proposed Commonwealth Brands corporate office relocation to Nashville, Tenn., will not take place," the company said in a statement.
The news was especially distressing for the local team that worked for nearly two years to land Commonwealth, representing a major job boost and local investment of more than $5 million.
“It’s a blow when we lose several dozens of high-paying jobs in a community that everyone was looking forward to getting going. Corporate offices feed the retail machine. These people go out at lunch and buy gifts," said Tom Tucker, Goodlettsville's economic and community development director.
The scrapped relocation also presents a thorny situation since the state and other parties already had paid out various incentives to lure the company. A handful of tenants were paid to move to make way for Commonwealth.
Tucker said Cox ensured him Friday that the company will make every effort to make everyone whole: “He told me, ‘Nobody is going to get shafted.' He said, ‘I will do everything in my power to make certain people who have paid upfront money to move tenants out are going to be able to come out OK.' ”
For now, Commonwealth is stuck with a 10-year lease commitment for the building.
The focus now is cleaning up issues surrounding the upfront incentives already paid. Once that is sorted out, local leaders will start from scratch to attract a new tenant.
“Commonwealth has a big incentive to find somebody,” Tucker said. “Cox said, ‘We are going to try very hard to get this thing subleased. Otherwise, we are going to be paying rent for 10 years.' ’’
“It’s not just them — all of us want to find someone to get into that building. We'd rather have a building with employees than empty,” Tucker said.
Some executives already had bought homes in the Nashville area.
Tucker said Cox didn’t want to do this, but the decision came from Commonwealth’s parent company, Imperial Tobacco Group, in London.
“It’s clearly a bad day for (Cox),” Tucker said. “A majority of people working for the company in this area are not going to be making the move to Ft. Lauderdale. They are being laid off essentially."

Most of my Saturday and Sunday mornings begin with me smelling myself. I stink. I stink bad. And, for the most part — you know, usually — it has very little to do with my personal habits or bodily functions. It has to do with my desire to unwind from the week in a club or a bar with my friends. And where there is unwinding and alcohol, there too shall be a third thing — a most odious vice: smoking cigarettes.Truthfully, it’s gross. I’m not sure what gentleman got the bright idea to light something on fire, stick it in his mouth and inhale — but it’s been a bad idea since. We...
