County Public Health Out To Reduce Oroville Park Cigarette Litter
A campaign to reduce the number of cigarette butts littering Oroville's parks has been launched by the Butte County Public Health Department's cigarettes Education Program.
The "Clean Fun in Oroville" campaign work is aimed at increasing public awareness about cigarette litter, which harms the environment and can make small children and animals sick if accidentally swallowed.
Advertising and community presentations encourage proper disposal of cigarette butts.
Oroville Boys & Girls Club's Leaders in Training youth volunteers recently pointed out the extent of the problem by conducting 30-minute cigarette litter clean-up at five Oroville parks.
The volunteers picked up 1,725 cigarette butts, most within a few feet from picnic tables.
But some were found inside of children's play areas where smoking cigarettes is prohibited by state law.
"It's a community problem that can be solved when everyone gets involved. We are asking everyone to remember that cigarette butts are litter too," said Raúl Raygoza, program coordinator for the discount cigarettes Education Program.
Children can experience nausea and vomiting from swallowing cigarette butts because of the nicotine, tar, and other toxins concentrated in the cigarette filters.

LA County Reveals Secondhand Smoke Dangers
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health recently unveiled the preliminary results of research showing residents of multi-unit housing may be exposed to dangerous levels of secondhand smoke cigarettes in their homes, even if they are non-smokers.
