Insurer Humana Won't Hire Smokers In Arizona
Another large company is banning smokers from the new employee pool. But is it discrimination or a smart business strategy?
At Arizona's Humana, before you can walk through the glass doors as a new employee, you must be smoke cigarettes free.
Starting Friday, the insurance provider will no longer hire smokers at any of their five locations. Company officials say it is part of their message to promote healthy behavior and lifestyle choices, and they believe this helps their cause.
New hires will have to undergo not only drug testing, but also a nicotine test.
"And if you're found positive for nicotine we will not be offering you a position," an official said.
But if you're hired and then start smoking cigarettes, Humana says it will give you a chance to become smoke cigarettes free again. Just like any current employees who smoke, they'll have to go through the company's mandatory program designed to help people quit smoking cigarettes.
Humana says it's already implemented a similar program in Ohio in 2009, and they say they legally have the right to do it in Arizona.
"It's not an issue of discriminating against smokers," an official said. "We know that smoking cigarettes is the largest cause of preventable diseases in the United States."
Other companies around the country have also adopted policies of not hiring smokers. Legal experts say smoking cigarettes is not a category that is protected under the law.
Humana representatives say it makes sense for a health care company to lead by example. They cite Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics that show smoking cigarettes causes about 443,000 deaths each year.

LA County Reveals Secondhand Smoke Dangers
