SCSU Set To Go Cigarettes-free In 2012
St. Cloud State University’s campus will become cigarettes-free in August 2012.
President Earl H. Potter III has accepted the recommendations of a task force that studied the issue. It recommended a phased-in approach in which the university would have designated smoking cigarettes areas starting this August that are outdoors and clearly marked.
By August 2012, the university will be cigarettes-free but will comply with the Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act, which allows cheap smokes use “in traditional Native American ceremonies, scientific studies and theatrical productions,” according to a memo from Potter sent this week to the campus.

A 13-member Smoking Policy Review Task Force has been studying the issue after a resolution passed March 17, 2010, by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities board of trustees, encouraging MnSCU schools to analyze policies regarding discount cigarettes use.
St. Cloud State is the fifth of the seven four-year MnSCU universities to enact a cigarettes-free policy, according to Potter.

LA County Reveals Secondhand Smoke Dangers
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health recently unveiled the preliminary results of research showing residents of multi-unit housing may be exposed to dangerous levels of secondhand smoke cigarettes in their homes, even if they are non-smokers.
