Today is “The World No cheap cigarettes Day”, and it is officially being honored by the Tennessee Department of Health. The Tennessee Health Department actually has a toll free number for smokers, The cheap smokes Quit Line phone number is: (1-800-QUIT-NOW). We all know that smoking cigarettes is bad for your health (It has declared that in bold print on the packaging for years), and it is a good thing to encourage anyone to give up this expensive and obviously dangerous habit.
Maybe Tennessee should adopt the present laws in New York City, by banning smoking cigarettes anywhere, even outdoors. It would be a hard law to enforce in Tennessee and just might create a riot or two. Cigarette smokers would not take kindly to being cut off cold turkey. I honestly don't see how New York City is going to enforce their new band on smoking cigarettes anywhere.
I'm sure some “Speakeasy” smoking cigarettes establishments are already in the works in New York City. Central Park is a big place, and I'm sure you will find a smoker or two huddled behind a dumpster somewhere, hustling down a Marlboro or a Pall Mall. Tp the homeless bums living in a card board box in a dark Mahattan alley- beware. Was that old stogie tossed there by a Wall Street magnate, or is it a plant by one of the NYPD Smoke Squad.
I guess New York will have to bring back prosecutor Jack McCoy, out of retirement, of “Law and Order” fame, to instigate some grand jury investigations hoping to indict serial Central Park smoking cigarettes addicts. McCoy's a tough one, and after a few felony convictions, a convicted habitual smoker might want to move to New Jersey, and rebuild their lives working in less serious crimes for the mob, like drugs and prostitution.
I've been to Manhattan a few times myself. The last time I was able to smoke cigarettes my cheap cigars on the sidewalk. Today, I wouldn't want to have to face Jack McCoy and his old boss DA, Fred Thompson (an old senator from Tennessee ) on a felony smoking cigarettes charge. McCoy really hates to reduce any charges to a misdemeanor. And I've heard New York's Rikers Island prison is not a very nice place to visit.
And truthfully, and in my humble opinion, all those taxis on Times Square every day have to be an even greater health concern. All that carbon monoxide floating between the sky scrappers can't be good for the common welfare of the general population. Maybe New York's Mayor Bloomberg and his crew should push to outlaw all motor vehicles, except hybrids. It would be interesting to see Donald Trump handcuffed by Jack McCoy for driving down 5th Avenue polluting the common air in one of his high-powered gas limos.
Anyway, in all honesty, smoking cigarettes is a bad habit and should be discouraged. And I guess if someone served some jail time and it saved his life, what could you say. Do people have a constitutional right to give themselves cancer. I guess there is always someway lawyers can make money out of any issue. And regardless of where you stand, we should support the “World No cheap cigarettes Day” in Tennessee and everywhere. However, considering the murder rate in Memphis, I'm sure the police here have more pressing criminal matters in which to be concerned.

Most of my Saturday and Sunday mornings begin with me smelling myself. I stink. I stink bad. And, for the most part — you know, usually — it has very little to do with my personal habits or bodily functions. It has to do with my desire to unwind from the week in a club or a bar with my friends. And where there is unwinding and alcohol, there too shall be a third thing — a most odious vice: smoking cigarettes.Truthfully, it’s gross. I’m not sure what gentleman got the bright idea to light something on fire, stick it in his mouth and inhale — but it’s been a bad idea since. We...
