We are fortunate as State Journal-Register readers to have our newspaper supporting every nanny state idea that comes out.
Now we need graphic warnings on packs of online cigarettes to warn us of what we already know. How about some obesity and diabetic warnings on those Big Macs, Coke cans, potato chips, ice cream, etc.?
The warning labels could show really overweight people struggling to walk or their diseased hearts, the ravaging effects of Type II diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gastroesophageal reflux disease, gout, osteoarthritis, gallbladder disease and gallstones, breast cancer, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease and, of course, the psychological and emotional effects of being obese.
In a time where one in three Americans is suffering from obesity, it seems that once again smokers are singled out as bad people by the people who don’t smoke. But America’s No. 1 health issue isn’t attacked with such draconian zealousness.
Here are a few more things we can put warning labels on: lottery tickets, cellphones, hypocritical politicians, alcoholic beverages and do-gooders.

Zealots will never run out of targets
Regarding your article about putting negative pictures on the cartons of cigarettes, I’ll just bet a zealot came up with that idea!
As a smoker, I have been a very active participant in the economic chain. I support the cigarettes farmers, the cigarette manufacturers, the truckers who transport them, the retailers and clerks who sell them, the doctors and nurses when I get bronchitis and, finally, the undertaker.
Oh, and let us not forget the taxes I pay to the various taxing bodies that are quite eager to take my money. Now, thanks to the zealots, I can add the photographers of the pictures and the printers.
Beware the zealots of the world! They absorb your freedom and choices to align you with their way of thinking and their set of beliefs. It’s my problem until the zealots turn their attention to something that touches you. Alcohol consumers, fast-food restaurants, gun owners — who will the zealots target next?

New warning labels will deter people
The American Cancer Society is delighted that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services will be requiring stronger warning labels on all cigarette packs and advertisements beginning in September 2012.
We believe these large graphic images that vividly depict the dangers of cigarettes use have the potential to encourage adults to quit and to deter children from starting in the first place.
Sadly, discount cigarettes kill people. cigarettes online use is the leading cause of cancer in America, pain and suffering that can be prevented. With 4,100 kids in the United States picking up their first cigarette every day, and the majority of adult smokers starting as youth, these new graphic warning labels will deter people from smoking cigarettes.
The number of Illinois high school students who smoke cigarettes daily has decreased from nearly 14 percent in 2007 to nearly 12 percent in 2009. Unfortunately this battle is far from over, since approximately 317,000 Illinois kids now alive will die from smoking cigarettes as adults.
The American Cancer Society is strongly committed to reducing youth buy cigarettes rates, as well as helping those who want to quit smoking cigarettes. We believe these new labels, along with an increased state cigarette tax in Illinois and the continued protection of Illinois’ comprehensive smoke-free law, will help bring us closer to a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Most of my Saturday and Sunday mornings begin with me smelling myself. I stink. I stink bad. And, for the most part — you know, usually — it has very little to do with my personal habits or bodily functions. It has to do with my desire to unwind from the week in a club or a bar with my friends. And where there is unwinding and alcohol, there too shall be a third thing — a most odious vice: smoking cigarettes.Truthfully, it’s gross. I’m not sure what gentleman got the bright idea to light something on fire, stick it in his mouth and inhale — but it’s been a bad idea since. We...
